Why does my car hesitate when cruising at 50mph

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, I have a lwb 1994 Jaguar Sovereign that seems to reach 50 mph ok but when you cruise at that speed or upto say 65mph, the rev's seem to fluctuate even if you don't change the throttle setting and it seems to hesitate to.

Has anyone come across this before or can anyone provide some direction? I wondered if it might be a throttle position sensor but thought I would see if there was another explanation.

As a first place to go, I might suspect plugs or coils.

Hi Wilf,

I am not very mechanically minded but would the plugs or coil only play up between say 50mph and 65-70mph and then be ok? The problem is not under accelertion either but rather when you maintain say 50-60mph.

in a word or two - they might. But as I said, that is only one possible cause.

Could be the auto box.

had similar fault years ago on XJS. Fault was the potentiometer.
