    JLR IDS Mongoose for £60

I have been following a thread on the XJ-X350 Aluminium Body forum:

How to lower your X350 - it's all here

The thread details how a £60 JLR IDS Mongoose OBD dongle and software can get into the service functions to lower the air suspension.

My post here is really a continuation of the XJ thread, but I thought best to list here and to bring it into the realm of the X-Type.

    I start with a question to Cambo351:

Cambo351 - what do you get when you plug your Mongoose into your X-Type?

Not knowing what to expect, but curious because it was only £60 odd, I purchased one of these JLR Mongoose from reading the XJ thread.

For thew record, my disc was loaded with, (and order of loading into a XP_SP3 Virtual PC (XP Mode inside W7_64)):
    IDS_DVD130_FULL.exe
    SPA_DVD130_V2.exe
    VDF_DVD130_V7.exe
J2534_Mongoose_JLR_x86.rar (I used the link provided by djdex on the XJ thread instead of the one on the disc)
    SDD_DVD130.04.exe
    Folder called JLR129 License Software

Briefly, the JLR129 License Software appears to remove the need for a TOPix password. When you run the license software, you get a screen of question marks, and 2 boxes, also with question marks. You have to select the left hand box for the software to work, and you finish off with a single box, again with question marks to complete.

When I run the software, I do not get the Service Functions menu selection, as you get with Cambo351's opening thread screenshot.
What is left is rather benign in the Session menu - it tells me certain modules fitted are responding correctly.

What I do get however, from the Session menu selection, is a key symbol on the left hand side that has a comment Click to activate coded access. When I select this, a box pops up listing my VIN, something entitled Seed, with a series of characters, and Password. I do not have a password for this, to find out what it is.

I suspect I haven't really got to the bottom of this dongle/software when used on an X-Type.

Does anyone have any experience of the IDS system, on an X-Type?

Once the IDS has connected to the car & made it's scans & asked it's questions, you should be presented with the screen showing the overview of modules fitted to the car (which by the sound of things you see); CAN_HS_NVOCJ, then ISO, SCP, MOST, etc...

    Down the bottom of the screen you should see buttons for;

    Pre-Delivery Inspection
    Measurement Applications
    Service Functions
    Campaigns
    Diagnosis
    Close Session

If you go into Diagnosis the SDD will make another scan then bring you to a series of dropdown tables, where you can select the "symptom" for example say you want to re-flash your Airbag module, then work your way down through the possible symptoms, and go from there.

Service Functions is pretty limited, just general stuff, if you want to do something specific you have to go in via Diagnosis.

Forget about the Golden Key, that is the Engineering Mode which as you can see is password protected.
In fact every time you connect to a car a new password is generated from the "seed".
When you have a Topix Programming subscription, you call up SPX, give them the VIN & the Seed, and they tell you the new password.
Apparently all the good (and potentially illegal) stuff is there in the Engineering Mode, hence the extra protection.

TBH i've only connected up to the X-Type once, and that was just to see if it connected, i didn't change any settings or flash any modules, and didn't take any screenshots either, frankly the X-Type was fine, behaving itself and didn't need anything done to it....the XJR on the other hand....

You might have also read in that thread that my Mongoose died, and was sent back to China for repair/replace....

I find it very interesting that you have "JLR129 License Software" but are running DVD130
The legit credentials for DVD129 will not activate DVD130, so I suspect your software has been activated in a different way, perhaps this is the reason for your limitations?
I did hear that some hacked versions had bugs & communication problems...but I don't know first hand, my activation was legit not hacked software.

I bought the same item and have had a little play. Works great and have re-calibrated a broken headlight level sensor (would need dealer to do this normally). The software design is a little counter intuitive though. Felt like it did nothing until I clicked around some more! Essentially you need to go to a section and then click service (I think). I'll post a how to with some screen shots soon.

Hello Cambo351 and Mrsmith - many thanks for your inputs.

At the bottom of the screen, I see two selections: Change Session Type and Close Session.
If I select Change Session Type, then I can see the Pre-Delivery Inspection, Measurement Applications, Service Functions, Campaigns, Diagnosis.
Selecting one of these gets me into further screens that then run out of information or further action.

Cambo351 - I do wonder if you have a point regarding the JLR License Software being 129 and the software being 130, and my system being limited as a result.

I plan to delete the Virtual PC, thus totally wiping the IDS software, and set it up again and install the IDS software afresh but not use the JLR129 License software, thus my need for the password.

Update - I have just received the username and password for the v130 from uobd2.com, and will proceed over the next few days.

    Thanks for the info... helpful

I could not extract the DVD to iso, it is dual layer and I *think* uses corrupt sectors to prevent copying

The main program IDS_DVD130_FULL.exe takes ~30 minutes to install and requires a restart when complete, installing the rest of the software takes a while with a second reboot required

Does anyone know what J2534_Mongoose_JLR_x86.rar (J2534_Mongoose_JLR_x86.msi) contains as it is 32 bit and won't install on 64 bit Windows - I can't set 32 bit compatibility unless I upgrade...

Hi, regarding the Mongoose, I see the new version is 131. Is this version of no use to the DIY'er???

Read a few threads on here regarding it, but don't know which is the best(to me read EASIEST!!) version to buy.

    Any help appreciated guys.

I bought mine within the last 2 weeks which came with v130 so I don't know about v131, I believe I have found a way to extract the iso just need to test the DVD I cut thereafter

I haven't hooked mine up yet, weather permitting I will do that over the next few weeks and capture some screen shots

If you have the option of going for v130 I would do so as there are others with the same version otherwise it is highly likely v131 will be similar and probably just a bug-fix version due to the minor digit increment
