Oct 2003 S-type 4.2ltr - headlight adjustment for continental driving.

Hi all on the above car fitted with non-HID Xenon headlights, is it possible to adjust the dipped beam so that you don't blind on-coming drivers, when driving in mainland Europe.

Some cars have a little lever within the light unit to flatten the beam.

I'm not referring to up & down or side to side adjusters.

    Cheers
    Dave

Afraid not. I exported mine to Sweden this year and for the short time I was still running on UK insurance I got some of them deflector stickers to put on the lenses. Perfectly legal and cost under a fiver. Easy to put on and off as well, just need to make sure the lights are on so the lens is warm to soften the glue.

I dare say that many people don't bother at all with them, but I always think its better to be on the safe side, just in case the local plod decide to pick on you!

Hi JMM, thanks for your reply - not the answer I was hoping for but never mind.

    Cheers

Non-HID Xenon, what does that mean? Do you have factory xenon or halogen lamps?

Factory xenons have a switch for right hand traffic.

I have RHD halogen headlamps. I want to see if it is possible somehow to change the dipped beam pattern from this \__ to this __/, so that I can run in France and pass their mot, plus not blinding oncoming traffic.

If the HID beam adjuster switch works the same as on BMW and Rover cars then it changes the beam pattern from this \__ to this ___ in other words just a flat dipped beam. This does not meet French regs although I know lots of peeps who have passed their French mot with them (or even just with stickers!!) but that is very much at the discretion of the tester. Knowing my luck it wouldn't work for me.

So I'm wondering if there is any way that I could dismantle the headlight unit, remove the front plastic cover and rotate the reflector, to give the desired beam pattern? This has been done on XK8's apparently.

    Cheers

Have a look here X350 Permanent Import: UK to Hungary (Headlamps)

OK you have halogens but there have been a couple of members on this forum who have done the same thing to X-Type halogens and passed.

99% you don't need to buy new lights.

Hi Cambo and thanks very much for that.

I sincerely hope I can do something with them as the prices for new ones is just completely ridiculous.

This will be interesting for me to see if its possible to adjust the S-Type units.

As I said, I was fortunate enough to find some secondhand ones at a decent price. But I now have the UK-spec ones in my basement gathering dust. If I can modify them and flog them, I'd be well chuffed!
