    S-Type rear brake noise

Took the family out for the day and noticed a grinding metal sound from the back of the car when I was about 20 miles from home

I had a good look round the car and spotted the rear nearside disc was scored across the inner half of the surface and by the time I got back to base the whole face was almost done. see photo http://i51.tinypic.com/5z0fn7.jpg

Obviously the rear pads need replacing but (and I think I know the answer already) will the disc? If so, any idea what the damage at a main dealer would be? I'd ideally do it myself and done a bit of searching on here but it sound like I may need some specialist wind back tools which I don't have so it doesn't look like something I can do myself. Is this the case? Do sensors need resetting, etc.

Car in question is a 2005 2.7d auto

    Re: S-Type rear brake noise

    Hi,
Did this job myself about a year ago now and found it straight forward enough on my 2.5 manual 2005 facelift model.
I purchase the require wind back tool from Halfords for 20 or thereby, which made the job easy to do.
I bought my Pads and Disc from EBC Brakes Direct on-line and they arrived the next day.
Hope this is of assistance to you. Total cost last August for 2 Discs and Pads = 129.81
    Regards,

Wind back tool. Laser Tools part no.1314. As stated, Halfords. (or any car spares shop), always a handy thing to have in a garage.

It's amazing at the information that's available on this forum and thanks for your advice.

Right, today's update. After many hours trawling this and a couple of other forums I felt more than confident to replace the discs and pads myself. I have reasonable mechanical knowledge and have tools for most small/medium jobs. However, as the car is a recent purchase and only done 6000 miles in my ownership, I wanted to get the main dealer's opinion (and price) on before I got on with it. With the exception of the 400 hit for the discs and pads, I suppose I'm glad I did, as in the end as it's turned out the calliper had seized on and will be replaced under warranty. If I'd done it myself it would have probably worked out around the same cost.

    Hi Dan,
Well that was good judgement on your part and worth getting the work done by the dealer considering the problem that was encountered, and done for what was a fair price.
    Trust all is well now.
