Just in case anyone wants to know. i took it to a jag specialist and there seems to leak from the gearbox sump gasket- seems to leak on the pipes which was causing the smoke![]()
Hi all,
I was driving down an A road yesterday; rapidly increased speed to overtake (reached about 85mph). When I came to slow moving traffic I started to see smoke from under the bonnet which also started coming inside through the vents.
Luckily I was right near petrol station to pull over. I lifted the bonnet, the smoke appeared to be coming from a mesh looking pipe underneath the engine (windscreen side end).
Any ideas as to what might be happening? I'm sure it wasnt radiator/coolant fluid, as the temp gauge seemed normal.
Incidently, I continued driving at at steady 50mph for another 25miles odd and there seemed to be no problems.
Any help/advice would be great.
Thanks.

Hope it wasn't too expensive!
This one goes to 11
I've not had the work done yet - next week. It's estimated at a couple of hundred (parts and labour)- apparently the XJR uses a particularly expensive gearbox oil (which apparently is different to the one used for XJ8s).
No terminal damage to engine/gearbox so it's not too bad.

The 4.0 V8s used the Mercedes box and the special ATF fluid costs a fortune (£23 per litre !) from a Jag main dealer, £10 a litre from Mercedes and less if you buy 20 litres from a direct oil supplier. Ask if you can buy the oil , look up the posts on XKR/XJR gearbox oil changes and buy it cheaper else where ?XJR uses a particularly expensive gearbox oil
Ah yes, I remember reading about sharing the gearbox with Mercs...
I'll just let them get the oil; how many litres would it need anyway??
