Thinking of buying XJR advice? (Right section this time)

    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an XJR to replace my S type. I will probably go for a 2000 upto 2002 model. Any thing to look out for in particular? E.G high mileage problems, noises to listen for etc.

I am aware of the nikasil probs and the timing tensioners but I guess it's not until you own one that you really start to find out about a car.

    Any advice appreciated.

I think you've named the only two real weak points of the car! I've heard rumours of superchargers needing replacing at 150k, but nothing concrete. The X308 seems to be a much less troublesome and far more thoroughly engineered car than the S type all round - a well maintained one with sorted timing tensioners is unlikely to give you any serious trouble. The gearbox in the XJR gives less trouble than the standard XJ8 too, although it's still the same "sealed for life" rubbish. If you're looking at anything over 60k I'd want to find out if the gearbox oil has been changed, as actually believing the sealed for life rubbish seems to lead to a life of 100 - 120k ish.

Same as all XJs though, check for suspension wear. I've heard that the discs/pads for the optional Brembo brakes are hilariously expensive, so I'd be certain you find the standard brakes inadequate before buying a car with the Brembo setup.

I'll check the gearbox oil. Which years does the x308 model apply to?

I've owned my 2000 XJR X308 for more than 3 years now and have done over 50,000 miles in it, had the thermostat, timing chains and adjusters, supercharger belt and adjusters changed as and when they needed doing, and recently had to have a reconditioned gearbox, the exceptions to the usual suspects were a new dashboard circuit board 2 months after I bought it, only issue with that is the mileage is out of sync but service history supports it, one of the pipes to the oil cooler split and a new cooler and pipework was fitted as the main dealer couldn't undo the split pipe and the heated front passenger seat has been a little unreliable It's now done 103,000 miles and still drives like a dream, I was going to swap it this month for an X350 XJR but I decided to hang on to it until Xmas so put 12 months warranty on it at the end of August and i'll run it until then, I may even keep it until the XF comes out if I like the look of it in the flesh, we'll see.
Good luck with finding your XJR, mine has been without doubt the best car I've ever owned and if you haven't found one by Xmas pm me mine might be for sale with warranty

    Hi

I think my timing chain needs replacing. I've replaced plugs and done an oil drai/replace without improvement. It's like a rattle from the bottom of the engine which gets worse as it gets warmer
Do you have any advice on how to determine a timing chain problem and how much can I expect to be charged to replace/repair?

    Many thanks

Hi Blackjag. Style, Comfort, and Awesome performance. Go for it. Get yourself an XJR. After all it'll have the same performance as the XKR but with a little bit more practicality.

Has it already had secondary tensioners done ? If so it might be the primaries but noises from the bottom of the engine are not usually good news. Rattles are often the belt tensioners and/or water pump at the very front of the engine, not usually low down though. Noise from the lower engine can be big end although usually described more as a rumble. Tensioners from £900-£2000 depending on specialist vs main dealer for the whole lot primary/secondary chains and guides

Got a 2001 with 58k on the clock. i needed a new exhaust when i bought it and now it seems to have a bit of a problem with the rear suspension rattling.

Otherwise hell of a machine. The brute in a suit.
