When I bought my X300 (sold but I pass it when I go to work) years ago the key would not work and even when loosened up it took a bit of force to open it. If you are going to ask me how many degrees of turn it takes to unlock, I cannot remember.
Edit - you can also apply power to another point in the car from the battery you removed and pop the boot that way.

I did not see this, I replied to your PM. Take care and make sure you get the polarity of your connections right.
