Change of heart

Postby bogart » Sat Jul 31, 2010 10:42 pm

After being here a while thinking my wife wanted an X type all of a sudden having been in an S type today all has changed.
I have now been scouring the ads to get an idea of prices etc and have a couple of questions.

1. Most of the cars on Pistonheads, Autotrader etc are 3.0 V6 SE Autos are these a good buy? if for no other reason than they may be a tad cheaper due
to there being a lot around.

2. Is the 3.0 V6 preferable to the 2.5 version.

3 And finally how does £3000 sound for a 2002(52) 2.5 Sport with 72000 miles?

Thanks

All subjective as no 2 people think the same but IMHO -

1. You got it :)

2. Yes, there aint no substitute for CC's (about the only thing I agree with Americans on   ).

3. Worth it if it is genuine mileage in good condition with full history, wouldn't buy it any other way

My advice, take your time and get a good one!
Regards, David.

Hi I think the main difference is the extra power you feel with the 3 litre IF you want and need it. I have had many S Types and my preferred choice is the 3 litre, that said I currently have a 2.5 and although it lacks that little bit of power over the 3.0 litre it is far from sluggish and pulls quite well....plus there is always someone in front of me anyway.

The fuel economy I have found to be about 3 or 4 mpg better in the 2.5 regardless of what others may say or the literture say that is what I find. The only real reason for me having the 2.5 is the price was good at the time of purchase and the condition, drive and service history were all spot on I really couldn't find a reason not to buy and the 3 litres I looked available did not match up..

If you have seen one at 3£k with 72000 miles I would say that is definately a good buy but depends on condition, service history, seller etc etc why not put a link here for members to look at and you may get better advice.....I find many many reasons from an advert not to buy.

Good luck, great cars.....

Hi

For some reason cannot copy the link from Autotrader, damn.

I have a budget of around £7k. Have seen quite few coming up at auction so may take a look there to get
an idea of prices.

Bogart if you have a budget of £7k why are you looking at ones for £3k?

Just curious....

You will open your options up massively with that budget for a S Type but probably the most important thing is the seller you buy from and the service history. Take your time and when you see the one you like ask the questions here.

Good luck

By the way I sent a pm with a link

Does anyone have experience of Stirling Cars in Loughborough. I note that on Autotrader half their stock are Jaguar. At least may be a
good place to visit to see a selection.

No experience of them but they have a 52 s type 2.5 sport with 87k on for £4k so if you have one in mind with only 72k miles and just £3k I would keep the northern attitude and look at that first.

Good luck.

My eye was caught by the red one 2004(04) 59K for £6k. Even I, never mind the missus, think it looks a nice colour.
I might take a wander up there and give it a once over.

One other point I thought of was I (we) would prefer it to have sat nav.
How good and reliable is the fitted sat nav and is it possible to get all of europe on it?
Thanks

Hi

My new S type has sat nav as standard but it's not a patch on
my Tom Tom Europe 1! The car is an 06 which means the sat nav
is 2005 vintage and an updated DVD is expensive. The Jaguar
system ( Navteq ) is ok but nothing special and unless you are
taken with the convenience of an integral unit I would not dismiss
otherwise acceptable S Type examples. I find the 3D screen
on the Tom Tom much easier to use but this is a personal opinion.

Good luck with your quest!

I find the satnav quite compared to some others I ahve had in the car particularly the Volvo system...but can say I never use it extensively.

You can have most of europe on it, I did on mine.

I haven't been to Europe yet but I think I read somewhere
that the Jag DVD covers mainland Europe only for the more
major roads. I will be bringing my trusty Tom Tom as back up!

Is the larger screen purely for sat nav or does the other driver info become more readable.
I am not a fan of in car sat navs as they never seem as comprehensive as standalone units.
I am more concerned to know if reading info will be easier as the two smaller screens are not exactly the biggest.

Hi,
Yes it is used for other items as well, including a controls for viewing the TV screen, the operation via the touch screen controls for Heating and Ventilation, Radio/CD operation and as a menu screen for all other functions.
I leave mine with the Jaguar logo showing when not using other functions.
